Village Harvest Festival

This weekend, our nieghbors at Earthaven Ecovillage (home of the Red Moon Herbs and Southeast Women's Herbal Conference offices, and the kids homeschool enrichment program) held the 1st annual Village Harvest Festival. They brought in a variety of vendors selling an array of crafts and goods, set up a stage for some local music, and provided demonstrations of yogurt making, felting, etc. The kids and I had a great time dipping beeswax candles...here is a photo of some of our favorite wonderfully shaped candles...
My co-worker, Carmen, set up the Red Moon Booth under our brand new EZ up tent that we are very excited about. David and I set up a booth for the Forest Children Program to promote the program in hopes of bringing in new families and to sell the kids book, Princess Gilanee. Cutest niece ever, Lilikoi, joined the girls and I for some hula hooping.
The wonderful parents or our dear friend Karen have been visting from Holland. Ronald and Trudy Hendrikse hold a very special place in our hearts and we dream of being able to visit them one day. Although they did not bring us gifts of cheese and smoked eel this visit, we did witness one of the sweetest gifts ever....Gita, who can be very shy, was thrilled to see them!

43 minutes to spare?

Can you eek 43 minutes out of your day?
yes?

I highly recommend:
1. getting cozy on the couch with something warm to drink
2. following this link for a interesting and inspiring interview with Micheal Pollan (author of The Botany of Desire, The Omnivores Dilema, and In Defense of Food)

www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95896389

In an open letter to the next president, author Michael Pollan writes about the waning health of America's food systems — and warns that "the era of cheap and abundant food appears to be drawing to a close."

The future president's food policies, says Pollan, will have a large impact on a wide range of issues, including national security, climate change, energy independence and health care.

October 20th

The Monday following the LEAF festival always feels a little hectic. We have such a great weekend...full of amazing music and family friendly fun. But the house and van fall into disaster mode, the fridge gets emptied, and energy runs low. Today is also Gita Pi Luca's 4th Birthday! We will have a party tonight (photos to come, I am sure), but the daytime ran much like any other Monday, with 2 major exceptions....pumpkins and acrobats!
We dropped Noah off for his Monday Waldorf home-schooling co-op (Mr Crowe, his teacher, said that the egg Noah is whittling made a major improvement today....pictures to come) and noticed that the church in which the classes are held was having a pumpkin sale. So after class, we picked out pumpkins...some for jack-o-lanterns, some for decorations, and some to give as party favors at Gita's party. The pumpkins are donated by farmers and then the proceeds go to the church mission programs. One of the funnest parts from the great pumpkin picking was figuring out how much each pumpkin cost. They had a row of examples with the price written in marker. The kids would pick out their pumpkin and then line it up near the example that they thought was the most similar. So there was a lot of "hmmm, I think that one may be more like a 4.00 pumpkin than a 5.00 pumpkin.." and so on. A neat lesson in estimating.

After seeing the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats at the LEAF festival this weekend, David took the girls to see them in town this morning.....a super bonus of homeschooling.....being able to catch a 10:30am show on a Monday morning!

Missing Dad.

Last weekend I was busy at the Southeast Women's Herbal Conference, staying at the camp Wednesday through Sunday. We had a few "normal" days in the begining of the week, the David said goodbye to us Thursday night, leaving before daylight Friday morning for Chicago. We planned easy diners, lots of movies, and some time "off" from the kids while they played with neighbors so I could try to catch up on some of the sleep I lost during the conference. We have missed our daddy so very much...and I am seriously missing our camara (!) which David took with him to capture his trip....leaving me with limited blogging possiblities! So today I borrowed Kelcey and Alex's camara for a few minutes to capture some of the "keep our minds off missing daddy" events....

First, getting Gita excited for her 4th birthday next week! I had done some gift shopping already and decided to seize one of her quietly watching video moments to wrap the presents. I did not know at the time but the wrapped presents would become a serious distraction later in the day. Gita saw them all stacked up and fell into a fit of glee and joy! But she quickly came to the conclusion that my wrapping was not meeting her expectations. So she determined what each one needed, "this one really needs a blue bow," "this one needs a happy birthday card," and set out to fill in the gaps. I will say, they look much more exciting now! And this kept her busy for at least 35 minutes while I cleaned out the fridge!

Next on the list of distracting activites, Gita and Nimuae decided to put their feelings on paper. Gita dictated this letter to Nimuae who used her incredible writing skills and a blue highlighter to get it all down. They wanted to mail it....hence the envelope addressed below. But I just did not think that the postal carrier would find David in Chicao, so we decided to photograph it and sent it to him via email.
And what coud be better at keeping our minds off daddy then a pancake birthday brunch for Lilikoi? Perfect timing! Here is Lili getting some serious love from the "auntie couch".....Auntie Becca (Kelcey's sister) and Auntie Em (yours truley) were thrilled to celebrate our favorite niece's first birthday! We were both honored to witness Lili's birth....and to be witness to the Loomer family and hearts growing bigger and bigger with this giggling bundle of love!

My distracting job is almost over. We head to Asheville in the morning to get Noah to his form drawing/fine woodworking class (he is almost finished carving an egg out of wood!) and then we pick up David at the airport! And the five carmonas are no longer the five carmonas minus one....phew!

Mi Familia

Southeast Women's Herbal Conference

Although my work on the conference began last November, the big push came on Wednesday when I packed up the van and headed to Camp Rockmont to begin the on-site part of my job. We started with some set backs and I wondered if the weekend was doomed. But by Friday, when the 500 women arrived, things has mostly smoothed out. I brought my camara with intentions to take a ton of photos...but I became far to busy as the weekend progressed. When we get the pictures from our photographers, I will post more. Here are a few of the pre-conference photos I have....

These tents are made in Asheville by a company called Artful Shelters. The crew sets these up in a matter of hours, it is quite a process. And at night, the tent is lit up with halogen lights...they look amazing! Here the set up is almost complete.

Here are 3 of our 4 golfcarts. We all have fun decorating our carts before the weekend begins.

We turn a boys summer camp into a weekend home for 500 women. Some of our classroom spaces, such as the gym above, gets used for smaller classes (50-100 women), morning yoga, night time dancing, and our keynote speech for all 500. Here we are settting up some decorations.
Anne, my dear friend and conference co-cook (with another friend Liana) shows off a very large pot of Millet Pilaf. These women cooked 6 meals for 500 women! The menu was amazing with a strong focus on local, seasonal, organic, whole foods. I was so proud of these ladies!
This year we started a Young Women's Circle for girls ages 11-17. We had some wonderful classes such as hula hooping, yoga, herb walks, self defense, dance, diet myths, and arts and crafts. Here the girls are volunteering in the dining hall (Eden Hall) preparing pitchers of water for the first meal.
